Tips for Buying a Car from Out-of-State Dealers

Shopping for a used car across state lines has become more common, and working with an affordable car broker can make the process smoother for buyers who want options outside their local market. Online inventory tools make it easy to find a specific vehicle in another state, and some buyers are willing to travel or pay for shipping to get it. However, buying from an out-of-state dealer adds steps that a local purchase does not have, and those steps carry real costs and risks worth knowing about before you commit.
Why Denver Buyers Consider Out-of-State Dealers
The most common reason is inventory. If you are looking for a specific make, model, year, and trim, the Denver market may not have it available at the moment you are ready to buy. The national used car market is larger, and a specific vehicle might surface in Texas, Arizona, or Nevada before it appears locally.
Pricing is the other driver. In theory, a vehicle in a lower-demand market might be priced below what that same vehicle commands in Denver, where AWD and 4x4 demand keeps some categories priced higher than in warmer states. Both of these reasons are legitimate starting points. The real question is whether the advantage holds up once you account for the added complexity.
What Changes When You Buy Out of State
The transaction itself works the same in terms of pricing and financing. The complications surface in the details that follow.
A Colorado buyer purchasing from an out-of-state dealer will still pay Colorado sales tax and registration fees when the vehicle is registered here. You do not avoid those costs by buying elsewhere. What you may face in addition is a temporary transit permit while the vehicle is transported or driven to Colorado.
Some states require a smog or emissions test before a sale can be completed. Colorado does not require an emissions test at point of sale for used vehicles, but the state you buy from might have that requirement. Confirming the out-of-state dealer's requirements before completing the purchase avoids surprises at a late stage.
Title transfer from an out-of-state dealer to a Colorado buyer also takes longer than a local transaction. The out-of-state title needs to be transferred into Colorado's system, which can delay permanent registration. This means more time on a temporary permit than a local purchase would require.
Colorado Taxes and Registration on an Out-of-State Purchase
When you register an out-of-state vehicle in Colorado, you pay the Colorado specific ownership tax and registration fees at the time of registration. The sales tax situation is more involved. If you paid sales tax in the state where you purchased the vehicle, Colorado may give credit for that amount toward what you owe here, but this depends on whether a reciprocity agreement exists between the two states.
Some states have no sales tax or a very low rate on vehicle purchases. If a Colorado buyer purchases in such a state and pays no local tax, they will owe the full Colorado rate when registering the vehicle here. Savings on the purchase price may be partially or entirely offset by the tax owed at registration. The Colorado DMV can clarify your specific situation before you commit to an out-of-state purchase.
Shipping, Travel, and Logistics
If the vehicle is too far to drive home, there are two options: ship it or fly out to pick it up. Vehicle shipping in the continental US typically costs between $500 and $1,500 depending on distance and the type of transport used. Open transport is less expensive. Enclosed transport protects the vehicle better but adds to the cost.
Flying out, inspecting the vehicle in person, and driving it back gives you more control over the inspection before you commit. But it means a day or more of travel, a flight cost, and the possibility that the vehicle does not pass your inspection after you have already made the trip. That risk is eliminated entirely when you buy locally and inspect before signing.
The Case for Buying Local in Denver
A local purchase is same-day, in-person, and comes with the ability to inspect and test drive before you sign anything. If something comes up during the inspection, you can walk away. If you have a question about the vehicle, you ask a person standing in front of you who can answer it.
